The absolute truth of life is the existence of death at the end of it; however, human beings cannot conceive their own deaths. By going beyond the philosophers’ statement that “If I am, then death is not/ If death is, then I am not”, the psychoanalyst does not solely place the concept of death at the end of life, but brings it into existence in life as well.
Death instinct, which harbors finiteness and phantasy of infinity at the same time, provides meanings for life that are at times contradictory with each other through its various manifestations. One of the faces of the death drive, the compulsion to repeat imprisons the individual into a cyclical history/fortune. The effort to neutralize this drive could also emerge as destructivity that is directed towards the self and/or external world. Destructivity attacks not only what is good but also creativity, thinking, knowing, and links. On the other hand, destructivity could also be at the service of life drive. As Picasso said, “Each creative act first begins with destruction.”
What place do the discussions on death drive occupy now? Is this concept still useful in the clinical field? What are its different manifestations in life and clinical field? What is the nature of the tense relationship between Thanatos and Eros? Under which circumstances, could creativity, aggressiveness, and death drive be turned into creativity and productivity?
Hoping to come together on 7-8th of December so as to contemplate these questions and more...
